New music download initiatives announced: M-BUZZ and PlayNow

[Back]

On September 19, 2006 at the PopKomm music industry event in Berlin, Germany, Sony Ericsson announced a new, exciting music initiative, in addition to participating in a music content panel discussion.

M-BUZZ is Sony Ericsson's new music promotional space for breaking new, unsigned and developing artists through Sony Ericsson mobile phones. M-BUZZ showcases selected previously unreleased tracks, videos, interviews, tour dates, artwork, ringtones and artist information using the PlayNow over-the-air (OTA) download service on Sony Ericsson mobile phones and the M-BUZZ website in over 20 markets globally.

PlayNow is Sony Ericsson's popular download service available directly from the phone menu on most Sony Ericsson phones featuring games and ringtones. This service has now been enhanced to include full-track OTA downloads for the M-BUZZ channel and will now also include tracks from Sony BMG's catalog.

M-BUZZ breaking new artists

M-BUZZ is a partnership between Sony Ericsson and Sony ATV, Sony's music publishing company, and it is all about offering new and unique music content in an edgy and frequently refreshed format. End-users will be able to find music and information about these new and emerging artists, and play an active role in creating tomorrow's big names. From October 2, 2006, M-BUZZ can be accessed by the end-user through PlayNow on the Sony Ericsson W850 and W950 Walkman phones, and through the M-BUZZ website. Check out the M-BUZZ website here>>

PlayNow full-track downloads
Upgrading the PlayNow service allows end-users to buy the latest music tracks directly from the phone through full-track OTA downloads. In addition to the new M-BUZZ material, PlayNow now includes tracks from Sony BMG's catalog through Sony Ericsson's collaboration with Sony BMG. PlayNow was introduced in February 2004 on the T630 phone as the easiest way to purchase polyphonic ringtones and since then the download service has been upgraded to include mastertones, real tones, games and now full music tracks in 20 markets.

Sony Ericsson's participation at PopKomm

PopKomm is an international music industry event attracting 15,000 trade professionals and this year is held in Berlin, Germany from September 20-22, 2006. Following the M-BUZZ announcement, Sony Ericsson is also participating in the Mobile Video and TV panel session discussing future trends in music content.

David Thompson, Sony Ericsson's Music, Film and Television Acquisition Manager, joined the discussion which raised the following questions:

  • Which new music channels are waiting in the wings?
  • Which music content is most wanted?
  • How well-developed are the links to shops, communication and interactive functions?
  • Is mobile music video a new marketing channel like MTV back in the days or an actual point of sale?
  • What is best for the artist and what is the consumer's demand?
  • Which degree of interactivity does the user want via mobile phones?

Dedicated developer support

Sony Ericsson Developer World stimulates audio- and music-related application ideas and has a dedicated music web resource at www.SonyEricsson.com/developer/music

So for developers, the aim is to make music-related applications as essential as themes, ringtones or games to the mobile content marketplace. Developers can use both Java ME and Symbian OS v9.1/UIQ 3 to imaginatively include music and audio in their applications or to create applications that enhance the mobile music experience.

To help developers understand the "ins and outs" of the music industry, we are publishing a series of articles titled "Getting the hang of the music industry". Part 1 introduces the interactions between the various components of the industry, part 2 presents audio codecs and part 3 outlines licensing and the importance of Digital Rights Management (DRM).
