New 3G smartphone revealed: P990

[Back]

The new Sony Ericsson P990 smartphone was announced in London on October 10, 2005, and will be the first commercially available smartphone to adopt Symbian OS  v9.1 and the UIQ 3 software platform. It is the newest addition to Sony Ericsson's successful smartphone series and is based on the same proven concept and form factor.

This UMTS smartphone is WiFi enabled, has Java API support to access the 2 Megapixel camera, has a large QVGA touch screen and features a hardware keyboard beneath the flip-down keypad.

Expanding smartphone developer horizons
To ensure a wide range of applications are available on the new Symbian OS and UIQ software platform when the P990 goes on sale in Q1 2006, Sony Ericsson has announced the smartphone well in advance of availability so that developers have time to create and certify as many applications as possible.

Developers can program in C++ or Java to create powerful professional and personal productivity tools for the P990. The smartphone is based on Sony Ericsson's Java Platform 3 (JP-3) and supports four new JSRs including Web Services (JSR 172). It is the twentieth phone from Sony Ericsson to support Mobile Java 3D with JSR 184. The P990 supports both CDLC and CDC Java environments, and standard Java applications can run in both flip-open and flip-closed modes.

The combination of UMTS and WLAN features will also significantly improve the efficiency and flexibility of applications such as e-mail, browsing the Internet/Intranet and video telephony. WLAN, available in hot spots all over the world, acts as a complement to high speed 3G services, enabling widespread access to corporate network services. In flight mode, P990 users can switch on the WiFi to stay productive while flying across the world.

On show at The Smartphone Show
Developers had the opportunity to experience the new P990 first-hand at The Smartphone Show in London on October 11-12, 2005. The smartphone evolution from the P800 based on Symbian OS v7.0 and UIQ 2.0 through to the P910 based on UIQ 2.1 was demonstrated at the Sony Ericsson booth, where visitors could also test a selection of applications from partners in a popular Device Playground. Delegates were naturally interested to learn more about Symbian OS v9.1 and UIQ 3.0 and could discuss development for the new P990 with Sony Ericsson Developer World representatives.

Software Development Kits
A limited preview edition of the UIQ 3 SDK was handed out by UIQ Technology to the first 500 developers who signed up for the new UIQ Developer Program at the Smartphone Show 2005 in London. A beta version of the SDK will be made available for download on from the UIQ Developer Progam website on October 26, 2005.

Sony Ericsson specific extensions and beta APIs will be available from Sony Ericsson Developer World during Q4 2005. The extension package will include the Sony Ericsson specific Vibration API and Bluetooth Keyboard API as well as emulator components such as fonts and skins.

Sony Ericsson Developer World will also publish a specific CDC SDK for Java applications development in Q4 2005. CLDC will be supported by a new version of the existing Sony Ericsson SDK for the Java ME Platform, and will be published later in October 2005.

P990 versions
The P990 will be commercially available during Q1 2006 in two different variants:
