| Now the Symbian Smartphone Show is over for another year, here's a summary of Sony Ericsson's major activities at the show and if you were unable to attend our pub night, a chance to watch the webcast of our senior managers discussing the UIQ 3 platform. | ![]() |
Sony Ericsson is redefining the smartphone in the age of multi-tasking with UIQ 3, taking it beyond the business market, expanding into new market segments such as entertainment and multimedia. The W950 is the first UIQ 3-based Walkman
phone and it also supports multimedia, web browsing, push e-mail, video streaming and 3D gaming using OpenGL ES. The Symbian Smartphone Show demonstrated Sony Ericsson's commitment to the UIQ platform, with keynote and other presentations, a developer pub night with a panel discussion, and Tech Support Live! in the UIQ Technology booth, all focusing on the powerful ecosystem that UIQ 3 offers developers.
Developer pub night: panel discussion webcast
On October 16, 2006, the night before the Symbian Smartphone Show, Sony Ericsson Developer World hosted a pub evening exclusively for developers and partners. In addition to enjoying a few beers with the Developer World and UIQ Technology teams, developers joined the evening's panel discussion moderated by Richard Bloor from SymbianOne.com and featuring Sony Ericsson senior management.

And now you can see and hear what the panelists had to say about the UIQ 3 platform, how the appeal of Sony Ericsson's UIQ 3-based phones is being broadened and which application areas to develop for in the future. Richard Bloor has published his impressions as a moderator of this pub night panel. He summarizes the main discussion topics including the technical challenges around the P990, Sony Ericsson's continued commitment to UIQ and the important, innovative role that third-party developers play in the expansion of the UIQ platform. Sony Ericsson exhibited in UIQ Technology's booth where Developer World ran Tech Support Live! sessions to solve UIQ 3 programming dilemmas on-the-spot and the team were on hand to talk about the P990, M600 and W950 UIQ 3-based phones. Lars Lindstrom, Senior Product Manager, demonstrated LocationFree We also had presentation sessions during the show, including a keynote by Mats Lindoff, Corporate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, and we issued three press releases. Here's a summary of Mats Lindoff's keynote presentation followed by Mark Donohoe's in-depth look at the P990, M600 and W950 and Henrik Voigt's overview of how the enterprise market is driven by both end-users and company demands (both presentations available for download). |

Keynote presentation by Mats Lindoff, CTO, Sony Ericsson
Conquering the Twilight Zone: How to shrink a laptop into a phone
Mats Lindoff discussed how we are closing the gap between phones, PCs and home entertainment experiences in the context of performance, capacity, networks and phone size. Battery life is a key issue and he explained how Sony Ericsson is maximizing phone productivity by using software solutions that run using less power, one of the reasons for using Symbian OS
due to its efficient power management.
He also outlined the reasons for choosing UIQ as our next generation OS:
- The experience: touch screen, keyboard, one and two handed mobile phones
- Flexible platform and multitasking capabilities
- Power efficiency
- Multiple network capabilities
- Multiple user scenarios, from business to entertainment
- Customizable phones for operators
Smarter phones come to life with smarter applications and Mats Lindoff explained how applications can make your mobile life productive, quoting push e-mail, navigation and music player examples. He concluded that one year ago smartphones made up only 9% of the mobile phone market but by 2009, predictions show that proportion will have increased to 27%: allowing the audience to draw their own conclusions about the exciting opportunities this offers developers and the market share Sony Ericsson may have by then.
