Tune in to music application development

[Back]

Supporting multiple music and sound formats, the Sony Ericsson Walkman family and other mobile phones series have firmly established the mobile phone as a credible digital music player. Now it's time to create music-related applications based on the Java Platform, Micro Edition.

Sony Ericsson Developer World is now aiming to create a mobile music eco-system with the help of the third-party developer community and energize Java application development by offering unique mobile music resources for professional content and applications developers. Therefore we have collected existing resources in a new web section>>

And it's not just music players.

Looking to add sound effects or voice-overs to a game or application? Intrigued by the opportunities of FM or Internet radio?

Opportunities with JSRs for music related application development include:

  • JSR 172 Web Services: accessing database services via e.g. XML parsing
  • JSR 205 Wireless Messaging 2.0: send and receive SMS/MMS including sound from a Java application
  • JSR 82 Bluetooth API: transfer music files or data via Bluetooth to/from other devices
  • JSR 75 PDA Optional Packages (File & PIM API): accessing e.g. music files and phone book
  • JSR 135 Mobile Media API: handling sound
  • JSR 184 Mobile 3D Graphics API: can be used for other 3D applications than games, potentially for music-inspired applications

Phones that currently support the above JSRs:
  • All Java phones from Sony Ericsson support JSR 135 Mobile Media API
  • 13 phones supporting JSR 82 Bluetooth API: P900, P910 and P990 series of smartphones, W550, W600, W800, W900, K750, D750, K600, V600i, K608, Z520
  • 11 phones supporting JSR 75 File and PIM API: W550, W600, W800, W900, D750, K750, K600, V600i, K608i, Z520, P990
  • 4 phones supporting new JSR 172 Web Services API: W550, W600, W900, P990
  • 4 phones supporting new JSR 205 Wireless Messaging 2.0: W550, W600, W900, P990
  • Now in total 21 3D-enabled phones, from entry-level to high-end segment: K700, Z500, S700, F500i (Vodafone), K500, K508i (T-Mobile), V800 (Vodafone), J300, K300, K750, D750 (T-Mobile), W550, W600, W800, W900, K600, K608, V600i (Vodafone), Z800, Z520 and P990

Here are some application ideas to inspire you:

Download agents

  • Platform requests in MIDP 2.0, launching web browser (http://[...]) to find music-related information and managing files using JSR 75 PDA Optional Packages (File and PIM API).
  • Local sharing of music files via IrDA or Bluetooth. Infrared connectivity is available through the OBEX protocol which is part of the JSR-82 Bluetooth API and allow exchange of objects, read more about creating a client application>>

Playlist management

  • XML-parsing using JSR 172 Web Services for exchange of web data and downloading additional playlists to the phone. Read more>>

Internet radio

  • Internet radio can be facilitated on mobile phones via streaming, podcasting, enhanced podcasting or semi-streaming:
  • Many codecs are available on Sony Ericsson phones, which means that streaming multimedia productions over the Internet via GPRS is possible using Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). Real Player is available on the Sony Ericsson K600 and Z800 UMTS series of phones. There is an FAQ for RTSP available here>>
  • Podcasting is a functionality for broadcasting and downloading of radio shows and news via RSS feeds using either the AMR compressed sound format (optimized for voice) or AAC and MP4 for richer sound.
  • Enhanced podcasting clients can be created in Java to enable the simultaneous broadcast of sound and images to enhance the radio experience.
  • Semi-streaming of audio files, with automatic download of the next section on completion of the first. This can be done using background download and more than one audio player. By using this feature you can play sound clips back-to-back and create a streaming like experience.

FM radio

  • The Sony Ericsson P990 supports playing FM radio via JSR 135 Mobile Media API.

External media/music players for download to non-Walkman phones

  • Owners of non-Walkman phones could also enjoy mobile music by downloading a media player to their mobile phones. It is possible for third party developers to create such media players. You can, for instance, use JSR 75 for file management and RTSP for streaming music or radio shows. A list of known RTSP implementations such as streaming servers can be found here>>

Music and sound effects in other types of applications

  • Add sampled sound effects or pick background music for game or productivity application from music-player playlist.
  • Use audio instructions in games or navigation applications. For voice prompting, AMR is the most efficient.
  • Enhance mobile education applications, e.g. dictionaries, with audio pronunciation guides and exercises.
  • Scalable Vector Graphics tiny (SVG-t) can be used to add depth to an application's user interface on Sony Ericsson's mobile phones. Themes and MMS templates can for example be enhanced with the use of sounds and ringtones.
  • Use the Mobile 3D Graphics API (JSR 184) to create three-dimensional music avatars.

Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a technology that enables secure distribution, promotion and sale of digital media and is a key feature for all parties involved in the content value chain. Sony Ericsson is one of the driving companies behind DRM development for mobile phones and all Sony Ericsson phones support OMA DRM v1.0. You can find out more by reading the Sony Ericsson white paper on DRM>>
