Introducing S500 and T650: two new JP-7 phones

[Back]

On 8 May 2007, Sony Ericsson announced two new phones that combine style details with impressive multimedia and connectivity features - "style with substance" is an apt phrase to describe them - and both support Java Platform 7 (JP-7), making 16 phone series that now support this platform.

The Sony Ericsson S500 is a quad-band EDGE slider phone, only 14mm thin, with visual effects playing a key part of the phone's design. The phone supports various light effects and version 3.15 of the popular Themes Creator tool now includes the S500's illumination features.

The Sony Ericsson T650 is a dual-mode UMTS "stick" phone, also slim at only 12.5mm thin, incorporating screen animations that interact with keypad illumination effects and design details of a stainless steel casing and scratch-proof mineral glass screen.

New S500 and T650 in more detail

Open the slim S500 slider and color accents and ever-changing desktop themes are revealed. Themes change as time passes (be it the seasons, day turning to night or when the weekend starts), hidden illumination appears to highlight an event and the keypad glows when the slider is opened. As themes are an important component of this phone, the popular Themes Creator tool is updated to include the S500's illumination effects and version 3.15 of the tool is available for download here>>

Design elements are also a key feature of the 3G T650.

Animations move across the screen, interacting with the keypad to set off waves of light around the stainless steel-finished keypad. Balancing form with function, the scratch-proof mineral glass display is placed directly onto the 262K TFT, QVGA screen making the colors more intense, improving visibility in bight environments and widening the viewing angle of the screen up to 170 degrees.

Going beyond the aesthetic, both phones are based on Java Platform 7 (JP-7) and feature a media player, full HTML browser, removable storage with a Memory Stick Micro, RSS feed support and Mobile 3D gaming with both JSR 184 and Mascot Capsule v3. Picture Blogging is an easy way for end-users to share their photos taken by the T650's 3.2 Megapixel camera and the S500's 2 Megapixel camera.

The S500 will be available during Q2 2007 and T650 during Q3 2007.

Java Platform 7 (JP-7) strengthens camera and image handling, and boosts gaming

Sony Ericsson facilitates porting of applications to many different phone series by continuing its successful Java Platform strategy. Through this approach, several phone models use the same Java ME platform version where JSR implementation and runtime behavior are consistent.

JP-7 helps developers create compelling games and imaging applications for 16 phone models that now includes the new S500 and T650. JP-7 supports a range of JSRs, including Advanced Media Supplements (JSR 234), delivers improved performance for 2D and 3D games and supports multiple, simultaneously running Java applications in a single virtual machine. Current JP-7 phones include:

The Java Platform strategy is supported by a consistent screen size approach, again helping developers to efficiently create applications for a range of phones at the same time. All mobile phones supported by Sony Ericsson Developer World are presented by screen size here>>
