Sony Ericsson has been voted winner of the Member of the Year category of the Java Community Process (JCP) Programs Annual Awards. The announcement was made by the JCP Program Management Office at an awards ceremony held on May 17, 2006 during the JavaOne 2006 conference. |

The JCP Program held its 4th annual JCP Program Community Event where awards in five different categories were revealed. The nominations had been made by the Executive Committees (ECs), and the winner in each category determined by Executive Committee vote.
The JCP Member of the Year award recognizes the corporate or individual member who has made the most significant positive impact on the community in the past year. Leadership, investment in the community, and innovation were some of the qualities that EC Members were looking for in voting for this award. The runners up for the Member of the Year award were JBoss, NTT DoCoMo, and Sun Microsystems.
Sony Ericsson's commitment Sony Ericsson is an active, voting member of the Java ME (Micro Edition) EC, participating in the evolution of mobile Java technology through the JCP Program. The JCP ECs guide the development of and approve new Java Specification Requests (JSRs). The Java ME EC is a group of members of the Java community guiding the development of Java technology on mobile devices and representing a cross-section of major stakeholders, including Sony Ericsson. |

Through the Java ME EC, Sony Ericsson has been working to ensure an open, well-managed Java community. Our clear mission is to ensure optimal progress of Java technology in mobile phones and to maximize the usage and interoperability of Java technology based applications on mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson's representative: Hanz Hager Sony Ericsson's representative on the Java ME Executive Committee, Hanz Hager, was at the event at The Argent Hotel in San Francisco and accepted the award.
Hanz has been part of the Java Technology for the Wireless Industry (JTWI), JSR 185 expert group and he now participates in the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA), JSR 248/249 expert group. He has also been involved in Sony Ericsson's efforts to start the Unified Testing Initiative and associated Java Verified testing program, which provides a framework for testing Java applications in the mobile space, and participates in the ongoing steering group for that effort. Sony Ericsson has also been one of the most aggressive advocates of Mobile Java 3D with Mobile 3D Graphics (JSR 184) now implemented in more than 30 of its phones and its Sony Ericsson Developer World program recognized as the leading technical resource in Mobile Java 3D. |

"The JCP Program Member of the Year award clearly shows that the community thinks that Sony Ericsson is an important player and that our contribution in the Java ME ecosystem has been successful and is highly valued. Hanz pays special attention to what will help Java developers, and he is enthusiastic about reducing fragmentation in the Java ME industry.
"Sony Ericsson's strategy to build backwards compatible Java platforms, aligned with the industry standard, is one of our contributions to reduce fragmentation. The fact that we focus on quality and performance is also a way for us to make sure we have a very attractive offering to developers, confirmed by active and very positive Community members and Premier Partners of Sony Ericsson Developer World," says Hanz.
