Application categories in the Sony Ericsson Application Shop

[Back]

The Sony Ericsson Application Shop website is a valuable go-to-market channel available to any third-party Symbian OS application developer who has a Symbian Signed application for Sony Ericsson phones. The shop provides a broad-range of application categories for end-users to choose from.

The Sony Ericsson Application Shop powered by Motricity is a scalable and dynamic market place aimed at increasing developer's revenues. The developer retains approximately 70% of the revenues (excluding taxes and transaction billing cost) from all applications sold. With the UIQ 3-based P990, M600 and W950 mobile phones coming to market during 2006, a new over-the-air (OTA) mobile storefront gives direct access to a wide range of applications utilizing the Opera browser and the UMTS capabilities of these new phones.

Application categories
The broad range of application categories supports both the new P990, M600 and W950 UIQ 3-based phones and the previous Sony Ericsson P910, P900 and P800 smartphone series currently still on the market. Applications are presented in the following groups:

  • Finance
  • Internet
  • Utilities
  • Language
  • Imaging
  • Music
  • Security
  • Travel
  • Games
  • Various
  • Leisure
  • Business
  • Navigation
  • Video
  • Messaging
  • E-books
Business benefits for developers
Operator feedback and download statistics from the previous Sony Ericsson Application Shop have shown that both consumers and business users are interested in using their Symbian OS and UIQ-based phones to the fullest potential. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) can be as high as 4 to 5 times that of more traditional voice-centric mobiles. Therefore it makes good business sense to provide applications types that support phone functionality and give end-users a choice of high-quality products. And trends also show that new phone releases generate increased application sales, so supplying applications ready for the new UIQ 3-based phones coming to market during 2006 is a logical step.

For example:

  • The music category is perfect for creative applications for the W950, the first UIQ 3-based Walkman phone with a QVGA touchscreen UI optimal for browsing and sorting music tracks or album artwork and 4G on-board flash storage. Read more about W950 here>>
  • The imaging and video categories support the video telephony and 2 Megapixel camera features found in the P990 smartphone. Read more about the P990 here>>
  • The messaging, business, internet, security and finance categories ideally suit the M600 messaging device as well as the P990, and the navigation and language categories are traditionally popular with Sony Ericsson smartphone end-users. Read more about the M600 here>>
