New W300 Walkman: a clamshell, quad-band EDGE phone

[Back]

On February 28, 2006, Sony Ericsson expanded the Walkman family of music mobile phones to seven with the announcement of the new W300: the first mass-market clamshell in the range.

This quad-band EDGE phone offers great quality stereo music, HTML browsing and Mobile Java 3D gaming. It has a VGA camera and 20MB internal storage. The W300 is shipped with extended storage on 256MB Memory Stick Micro (M2), expandable to 1GB, as well as a stereo headset, USB cable and music management software.

Music files can be stored in industry standard MP3 and AAC formats, enabling legacy CD collections to be easily transferred to the phone with the accompanying Disc2Phone PC software.

Music-related Java ME application opportunities
Moving beyond just music tracks, Sony Ericsson Developer World stimulates other music-related application ideas and has set up a dedicated music web resource at www.SonyEricsson.com/developer/music

The W300 Walkman is based on Sony Ericsson's Java Platform 6 (JP-6), and developers can use a range of JSRs to create music-related applications and advanced 3D games.

Opportunities with JSRs for application development include:

  • JSR 75 PDA Optional Packages for the Java ME Platform:
Implemented in a range of phones to permit Personal Information Management (PIM) data access and file system access, for example accessing music files, images or phone book
  • JSR 82 Java APIs for Bluetooth:
Enables PC connectivity from mobile Java applications, files or data transfers via Bluetooth to and from other devices, and wireless multi-player gaming
  • JSR 172 Java ME Web Services Specification:
Now implemented in the W300 and the other Walkman phones including the W600, W550, W900, W810 and W950, as well as in the P990 smartphone and the M600 messaging device to take advantage of a lightweight XML parser to create powerful MIDlets that are comparable to Java SE counterparts
  • JSR 184 Mobile 3D Graphics API for Java ME:
Implemented in a broad portfolio of 31 Sony Ericsson mobile phones to encourage mobile three-dimensional gaming and other non-gaming related applications such as 3D GPS mapping, avatars, user interfaces adding depth (3D instead of SVG), and 3D virtual walk-throughs of various scenes
  • JSR 205 Wireless Messaging API 2.0:
Enables the sending and receiving of Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages from Java ME applications
  • JSR 135 Mobile Media API:
Allows accessing the camera and handling sound

Other opportunities for developers include the possibility to create content based on the SVG-T (Scalable Vector Graphics Tiny) standard, animated gifs, ringtones, themes etc.

The W300 will be available during Q2 2006 in the following versions:

  • W300i for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa and Americas
  • W300c for Mainland China
