Supporting application and content developers within the music arena, the new Sony Ericsson Music and Video Developers' Guidelines give a summary of the media functionality in Sony Ericsson mobile phones and provide a technical overview of the codecs, file formats and MIME types supported.
This document is divided into two sections:
1. General overview
Presenting an overview of the technologies and tools used to transfer music and video from producers to end-users, this section explains media transfer and storage, local connectivity, streaming and downloading and how Sony Ericsson supports DRM (Digital Rights Management). Within the streaming and downloading sub-section, progressive download, podcasting and mobile TV are all discussed. Here you will also find information on general media support including HTML browsers, RSS feeds and media transfer over MMS.
2. Technical specifications
This second section gives a technical overview of audio and video codecs, audio and video MIME types for MMS and streaming video supported by Sony Ericsson mobile phones.
A codec (enCOder/DECoder or COmpressor/DECompressor) is a program that compresses and decompresses audio or video data. The reason for using codecs is to reduce the size of audio and video data to speed up transmission and reduce the needed storage space. MIME stands for Multimedia Internet Message Extensions.
This information is presented in chart format, detailing which phone model supports which codec or MIME type.

Developer support
Sony Ericsson Developer World has a dedicated web section to stimulate the development of music-related Java
ME and UIQ 3 applications, giving both C++ and Java ME developers the opportunity to imaginatively use music and audio in their applications for a broad range of mobile phones. Examples of potential music related application areas are playlist management, download agents, FM and Internet radio solutions as well as using music and sound effects in other types of applications.
