Sony Ericsson's first i-mode phone: K610im

[Back]

On June 19, 2006 Sony Ericsson announced its first i-mode mobile phone: the slim, dual mode UMTS K610im.

This DoCoMo Java (DoJa) phone has a dedicated i-mode key to access features such as e-mail (iMail), MMS (iMMS) and web browsing with page content formulated for i-mode, and also includes a 2 Megapixel camera, music and video player, 3D gaming and extendable memory with a Memory Stick Micro (up to 1GB available).

i-mode features
The innovative i-mode service delivers a richer experience in connected mobile applications such as e-mail (iMail), web browsing and MMS (iMMS). Viewing multimedia is faster and easier, thanks to web content specially formulated for i-mode. Lighter pages give faster download speeds and end-users are given access to a host of i-mode sites and content, for example games, news and music.

"We are extremely pleased that a leading brand vendor such as Sony Ericsson is to offer market leading handsets with full support for i-mode services. Sony Ericsson has achieved an excellent integration of the i-mode service portfolio and the result is a compelling consumer offering." said Mr. Takeshi Natsuno, Senior Vice President, Managing Director, Multimedia Services, NTT DoCoMo, Inc.

A fundamental part of the i-mode service offering is Java content which is realized through DoJa, the name used to describe the specialized Java platform employed by i-mode. With DoJa, you can create so-called iApplis, a directly contrasting term to the more familiar MIDlets. The end-user obtains iAppli content in much the same fashion as MIDlets where the provider can publish content which may be browsed and downloaded and installed directly via the phone browser.

K610im versions
The K610im will be available during Q3 2006 for i-mode markets in Europe, Asia Pacific and Middle East.
