On July 10, 2006 Audible, Inc, the leading provider of spoken entertainment and information on the Internet, announced that Audible's application and content will be included as a Try & Buy application on Sony Ericsson's UIQ 3-based phones, the P990, M600 and W950.

AudibleReady means that audiobooks and other digital content can be downloaded from Audible's web sites and played back on mobile devices. This application has been ported to UIQ 3 and will be preloaded on the Memory Sticks that accompany the M600 and P990 phones and included with the W950 Walkman phone. This agreement enables M600, P990 and W950 end-users to access more than 100,000 hours of Audible's premium spoken content. Sony Ericsson and Audible are also preloading five-minute samples of titles in French, German, English and Spanish in addition to a free 30-day trial of the Audible service.

Developing for the UIQ 3 platform

"We are very excited to have Sony Ericsson as a new partner. This gives us the opportunity to be featured on what are likely be some of the hottest phones in the global market: the M600 messaging device, P990 smartphone and W950 Walkman phone," says Chia-Lin Simmons, Vice President of Strategic Alliances of Audible, Inc.

"The M600 messaging device and P990 smartphone are stylish new handsets with a focus on the busy professional, are clearly a great fit for our global service. We are also excited to bring our extensive library of digital content to the Walkman phone offering."

Development for the UIQ 3 platform presented unique challenges for the Audible team. Audible did not have a pre-existing application developed for delivering its service on the UIQ software platform. While the company had already created a Symbian OS Series 60 v.2 application, Audible development required additional assistance for developing for the Symbian OS v9.1 platform. With that in mind, Audible brought on board EMCC Software, a UK based development firm with expertise in the Symbian OS platform, to assist the company in extending Audible's service to UIQ 3-based phones.

"Audible is already a best-selling digital audio service available for several other platforms on the market. Sony Ericsson's UIQ 3.0 based phones are the ultimate PDA replacements and we believe audiobooks will become a huge success across our range of Symbian OS-based phones. This type of application benefits not only our W950 Walkman phone with its powerful media player, but the P990 and M600 phones as well, as different audiobook and news content can be targeted towards more business-oriented audiences," says Ulf Wretling, Director and Head of Content Planning & Management at Sony Ericsson.
