Simon Judge.

This UIQ 3 tutorial series is written by Simon Judge, a freelance mobile developer who develops for Symbian OS, Java ME and Windows Mobile. Simon Judge also maintains a mobile phone technology blog here>>

In case you missed it, in part 1 of this tutorial series Simon Judge describes what UIQ is, where it fits in the Symbian OS ecosystem, why you should develop for it and the fundamentals of designing a new UIQ 3 application. Download Part 1: the UIQ Platform>>

Sony Ericsson Developer World has also gathered all UIQ 3-related development resources in one convenient location: the new Productive Mobility UIQ 3 apps development web resource section. Check it out here>>

Part 2: UIQ SDK and tools setup

The UIQ development environment is a mix of Symbian OS base SDK, UIQ SDK, IDEs, optional manufacturer specific extensions and third-party tools. Part 2 of the UIQ 3 tutorial series gives setup advice and outlines how post-installation configuration within your existing PC environment can solve most problems caused by working with this complex mix of tools. Simon Judge explains this in the following sections:

UIQ SDK
The UIQ SDK itself is a collection of UIQ, Symbian and third-party tools and is based on the Symbian C++ SDK. Here Simon Judge describes how to install the UIQ SDK, switch between SDKs, start the emulator, connect the emulator to the Internet and then gives troubleshooting advice.

Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
The UIQ SDK can be used with a number of IDEs and this tutorial focuses on the Eclipse-based Carbide.c++. An overview of Carbide.c++, CodeWarrior 3.0 and 3.1 and Carbide.vs/Visual Studio .NET 2003 is given followed by Carbide.c++ Express setup steps and tips.

Additional tools and SDKs
Simon Judge wraps up the tutorial by providing information on Makesis (generates a .SIS install package), Sony Ericsson M600 and P990 extension packages, Vistamax IDE for automatically creating UIQ 3.0 user interfaces, third-party file explorer and how to generate screen dumps of your application.
