[Back]

On February 6, 2007, Sony Ericsson announced four new phones supporting Java Platform 7 (JP-7), making 12 phone series that now support this platform.

20 million Walkman mobile phones have been sold to date and the new W880 and W610 further expand this successful mobile Walkman portfolio. 4.5 million Cyber-shot camera phones have been shipped since the K790 and K800 were introduced in summer 2006 and the new K550 and K810 broaden the appeal of the mobile Cyber-shot phone family.

The W880 Walkman is a UMTS and tri-band GPRS phone and is Sony Ericsson's slimmest phone yet at just 9.4mm. The W610 Walkman is a quad-band EDGE phone and is a slim-line 14mm thin.

The K810 Cyber-shot is a dual-mode UMTS phone with a 3.2 Megapixel camera featuring a Xenon flash and 16x digital zoom and is a sleek 17mm thin. The K550 Cyber-shot is a quad-band EDGE phone with a 2.0 Megapixel camera, also benefiting from the Cyber-shot camera user interface.

New W610 and W880 Walkman phones

Both the W610 and W880 include the latest Walkman player 2.0 which simplifies music track, playlist and genre navigation with a more intuitive UI. The TrackID music recognition functionality is also featured. TrackID records a few seconds a track from the radio or microphone, sends the track to the comprehensive Gracenote music database for identification and returns the information to the phone. Both phones also include a 2 Megapixel camera, full HTML browser, removable storage with a Memory Stick Micro, RSS feed support and Mobile Java 3D gaming with both JSR 184 and Mascot Capsule v3. The major differences between the phones are network frequency support, styling and end-user lifestyle choices.

Sony Ericsson Developer World stimulates audio- and music-related application ideas and has a dedicated music web resource. So for developers, the aim is to make music-related applications as essential as themes, ringtones or games to the mobile content marketplace. Check it out here>>

The W880 will be available during Q1 2007 with the W888 as a GSM variant specifically for the Chinese market where 3G services are not established. The W610 will be available during Q2 2007.

Java Platform 7 (JP-7) strengthens camera and image handling, and boosts gaming

Sony Ericsson facilitates porting of applications to many different phone series by continuing its successful Java Platform strategy. Through this approach, several phone models use the same Java ME platform version where JSR implementation and runtime behavior are consistent.

Java Platform 7 (JP-7) is the latest and helps developers create compelling games and imaging applications for 12 phone models that now includes the new K550, K810, W610 and W880. JP-7 supports a range of JSRs, including Advanced Media Supplements (JSR 234), delivers improved performance for 2D and 3D games and supports multiple, simultaneously running Java applications in a single virtual machine. Current JP-7 phones include:

The Java Platform strategy is supported by a consistent screen size approach, again helping developers to efficiently create applications for a range of phones at the same time. All mobile phones supported by Sony Ericsson Developer World are presented by screen size here>>
