M600: New Symbian OS phone, a 3G messaging device

[Back]

Sony Ericsson sees a strong market demand for mass-market phones with enhanced messaging capabilities. End-users expect true office mobility - retrieving, reading and replying to e-mail at any time, in any location - and Sony Ericsson has responded to this demand by creating a mid-range, UMTS mobile phone and messaging device.

The new M600 is a fully-specified e-mail tool and 3G mobile phone, only 15 mm thick. It is the second Sony Ericsson Symbian OS v9.1 and UIQ 3-enabled phone.

The M600 features a QVGA touch screen, handwriting recognition, up to 80MB internal memory, extended memory with the new ultra-small Memory Stick Micro (64MB supplied, up to 4GB available), a three-way Jog Dial and a dual function keyboard. It offers push e-mail application support, remote synchronization and customization opportunities in addition to anti-virus and firewall security.

Gaming is given a boost with hardware accelerated 3D graphics, supported natively (C++) and by JSR 184.

C++ and Java ME development
The M600 is a Symbian OS v9.1, UIQ 3-based mobile phone and offers great pportunities for both C++ and Java ME developers.

UIQ 3
The recently launched UIQ 3 platform is an open software platform, based on Symbian OS, allowing developers to potentially target all UIQ 3-based phones from different manufacturers, using one single codeline. Applications will automatically receive the look and feel of the device they run on without the need to write extra code for it.

Other benefits include:

  • Flexible configuration. Portrait and landscape display. Keypad, keyboard and pen text in-put. Menu and softkey user interface
  • Improved view layout control using Building Blocks
  • Improved framework toolkit providing dynamic containment and layout management leading to better developer productivity
  • A modern UI representation with richer graphics

The latest version of the UIQ 3 SDK is available for download from UIQ Technology's Developer web portal>>

C++ applications debugging for the M600 is supported through the Metro TRK on-target debugger, available in Carbide C++ Developer and Professional Editions.

Java ME CDC and CLDC
Both Java ME CDC and CLDC environments are supported by the M600. The Java CDC and CLDC Developers' Guidelines, updated with M600 information, are now available for download here>>

The IDEs from Borland JBuilder 2006, NetBeans 4.1 + Mobility Pack (Sun Microsystems) and Eclipse 3.1 + Eclipse ME can be used for Java-based applications.

On-device debugging of Java ME CLDC and CDC applications is supported through JDWP (Java Debug Wire Protocol) which allows most Java aware IDEs to be used out-of-the box towards for debugging.

Sony Ericsson docs support
Updated for the new M600, the following Sony Ericsson documents are now available for download:

M600 versions
The M600 will be commercially available during Q2 2006 in two different variants:

  • M600i Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz): GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa and the Americas
