Note: An Abbreviation List is available at the bottom of this article>>

With the Z1010, Sony Ericsson takes a giant step into the communications future of multimedia, imaging and entertainment. Sony Ericsson also combines the latest messaging and connectivity technology with the newest entertainment features. A Sony Memory Stick Duo can store content such as pictures, audio and video clips. With twin cameras, a 65k color display and BluetoothTM connectivity, this mobile phone is a trend setter for pioneers of new technology and applications.

The Z1010 is a dual mode mobile phone that supports GSM 900/1800 and GPRS 4+1. It supports voice, circuit-switched data, and packet-switched data.

Programming Features
The most exciting feature of the Z1010 is its 3G capability. 3G introduces not only a faster communication channel (up to 2 Mbps), but a whole new way to communicate. It is IP based, so the connection is always on. However, the user only pays for information actually sent or received. The Z1010 allows the user to perform multiple online tasks at the same time. For example, the user can send a photo in an MMS message or play an on-line game while speaking on the phone. 3G brings more accurate positioning capability. Location-based services and applications can use this more accurate information to deliver content that is more relevant and timely to the user.

Impossible to miss is the LCD screen. It is large and colorful: 176 pixels wide and 220 pixels high (176 x 220), and displays 65,536 colors. The larger size and greater color depth makes pictures, video playback, and application interfaces both colorful and easier to use.

The Z1010 uses the latest J2ME implementation, the MIDP 2.0 specification (JSR-118). It also supports the Wireless Messaging API (JSR-120) and the Mobile Media API (JSR-135). With JSR-135, you can playback audio and video content, and take pictures with the Z1010's built-in camera. You should note that the JSR-120 implementation supports only SMS messages, not cell broadcast.

The Z1010 is along with the P900 Sony Ericsson's first MIDP 2.0 phone. MIDP 2.0 represents the next-generation mobile Java platform and adds many developer-requested features. For example, MIDP 2.0 adds a GameCanvas class that allows layers, tiling, and sprites, plus new key-handling techniques that allow keystrokes to be handled much more efficiently. Thus, games are easier to create. The programmer also has more control over a game's execution, and can make it perform better. MIDP 2.0 offers support for end-to-end security, which enables secure transactions or messaging. User interface improvements such as Form Screens, Pop-ups, Alert screens, and Items simplify writing enterprise applications. With the MIDP 2.0 push architecture, MIDlets (a term for J2ME applications) can be activated by over-the-air information.

Other features of interest to developers are WAP 2.0, MMS and DRM. DRM is becoming more sophisticated, giving more control to the content provider. Content delivered to the Z1010 can be controlled via DRM to specify for example that only subscribers can access the content, whether the user is allowed to forward the content to another device, and that access to content can be limited in time or to number of viewings.

Tools
There are several tools options available to the programmer.  To create J2ME MIDlets, you can use the Sun One Mobile Studio or Borland JBuilder, integrating the Sony Ericsson J2ME SDK.
