Symbian Foundation - what happens now to UIQ devs and UIQ users?????

Dear SE support,

Yesterday news dropped like a bomb in the uiq comunity. Forgeting the discussion regarding if the move is really positive for people that like UIQ (and many of us feels this will end up with reashed a s60 totally controladed by Nokia), there are important questions to put in the short term, and users expect Sony Ericsson to come forward and answer, knowing that the first Symbian Foundation devices will only be out in 2010 and at the same time UIQ is firing hundreds of workers:

- G700 and G900 have just been launched - will SE support this devices, i.e., there will be more fimware launches???? FL3 is promised on the G900/G700, will it ever happen???

- Regarding P1 and W960, will there be more firmware versions with added funcionality (same stuff provided for G900/g700), or will these devices end with EVEN LESS support than P990/M600/W950???

  • Some developers are already talking saying there´s no point in developing for UIQ now...what SE will do about this??? Will the UIQ3 forum here still have a reason to exist??? Or will SE just betray their UIQ smartphone users (again)???

  • Finally...can we expect any new Symbian hardware to actually come out between now and 2010, or will SE totally abandon UIQ and its users, and focus on WM???

I hope we get answers, soon

Yes, these are valid questions, especially I am concerned about the future (next 2 years) -- is there any sense in developing and maintaining UIQ3 software? Will there be any devices and support for developers (and users) for these devices?

And after two years, to what should UIQ developers prepare for? What will SE and the remains of UIQ (if any) offer smartphone developers - if anything?

I expected that UIQ and SonyEricsson would have - at the same time of this groundbreaking news - inform their developer base of these questions and issues. But considering the "openness" of the these companies lately, I should have expected that we are left in the darkness here. What a shame.

I've been an Ericsson/SonyEricsson user and developer since SH888, through T39, R520 and P800, P900 and finally P990. For the last two years being more and more disappointed both regarding developer and user support and commitment towards the users and developers. The technology (UIQ) has been quite good by itself, but the way it has been brought forward and supported, not so. The bad thing about the news we have heard is that (IMO) superior (even though not adequately resourced development of) UIQ is lost when the inferior (both technically and usability wise) S60 will be the base for the future Symbian UI. I do not believe that UIQ has any significant role, when reading about the new UI being backwards compatible with S60 3rd Edition.

Should we just abandon SE/UIQ and go towards other challenges? I think it is now the last moment to present something positive and encouraging for smartphone developers. Even if that is simply a message to go elsewhere and forget the past with UIQ/SE.

I almost forgot that I even had the first Ericsson EPOC device called MC218 (though it was just a branded Psion Series 5mx actually). A great device, and now SE brings out the Xperia X 1 with touch screen and keyboard with Windows mobile. Why not using the experience from the past and produce something like this based on UIQ? Looking at the success of high end smartphones and internet tablets, as well as ultra mobile PCs, that wouldn't have been a bad device at all.

UIQ developer support gave kind of an answer here. Still would like to hear something from a device manufacturer too.

Hi guys,

Sony Ericsson will continue to ship UIQ phones for quite some time, with the G700 and G900 recently coming to market, and Motorola has publicly said it will do the same. So nothing will stop immediately. We would like to encourage our developer community to continue developing for this UIQ application market.

Obviously the start of the Symbian Foundation will have an impact on Sony Ericsson’s future strategy. Over time, Sony Ericsson will be moving to the Symbian Foundation platform. This means that UIQ Technology will need to find a new place in the ecosystem. Sony Ericsson is currently talking to Motorola and the management of UIQ Technology to explore different options to find the best role UIQ Technology can play.

More information will be communicated in the future when the plans for the Symbian Foundataion are clearer.

BR
Martin

Thanks for this information.

I understand that it is quite difficult to release information about future products especially. Still, this situation -- if any -- would be a place to give a clear and unambiguous roadmap for developers on how you plan to proceed. We need to be sure of the near future market of UIQ software -- what number (at least, if not models/specs) of devices are (even possibly) coming out from SE and when, based on which version of UIQ. Then, we need -- when you get your plans together -- a clear roadmap on the transition to the future Symbian generic platform. The latter can take over a year, so as a developer I am not expecting much soon. There is a wide chasm to leap here and we cannot do that without your support, cooperation and information.

But for near future we need to know if it is still profitable to invest in UIQ development. What I would like to see is Sony Ericsson walking with us to the future and showing us the road ahead so we can safely continue developing to the (IMO technologically better) UIQ and then later on migrate to the generic Symbian Foundation platform. Whatever that becomes to be may or may not be up to Nokia alone more or less, but those are bigger games to play that a normal third party developer can just watch in awe what happens when the dust settles.

So we need Information -- very much of it. Without begging for it. Details. Visions. Support. We need to know if you yourself are not still sure of some place in the path, and we need to know that you will tell us when you know. This would make a developer much more happier. I believe we are not coming after you with a bunch of lawyers if you tell us that the information is not carved in stone but can change, as long as we are aware where you are heading at even if the plans change.
